This McCarthyism and Red Scare lesson plan and episode teach the story of Joseph McCarthy and McCarthyism during the Red Scare in the early years of the Cold War that resulted in a loss of civil liberties and widespread fear and paranoia.  Teaching the rise and fall of McCarthy, claiming to have a list of 205 communists in the State Department, his many phony claims, the HUAC (House of UnAmerican Activities Committee),  Hollywood 10, Truman's Loyalty Board, and the McCarthy-Army Hearings that brought about his swift fall from grace.


Students analyze cartoons and then a Truman speech answering questions and then matching ideas from the speech to the cartoon’s messages to learn how paranoia and a loss of civil liberties and governmental abuse categorized McCarthyism in this engaging Cold War lesson plan.
