Fun US History Activities 

WHAT STUDENTS LEARN

In the first episode students learn about America's early neutrality and how the Pearl Harbor attacks thrust America into the war. In the second lesson/episode, students learn how women’s role transformed on the homefront and how the 'real Rosie the Riveter' characterized what so many women experienced. Then students explore how  the mass incarceration of all people of Japanese and how Fred Korematsu fought for his rights and took his case all the way to the Supreme Court. 

In the fourth lesson, students learn about the war in Europe and how the D-Day invasion ultimately led to the surrender of Nazi Germany. In the last video-lesson, students learn about the war in the Pacific and the dropping of the atomic bombs on Japan.  Each lesson is taught through story in a way that will students won't forget!

ACTIVITIES IN THIS BUNDLE

1. Create a 'Point-of-View' Timeline (comparing Japanese to American POV) of the road to the attack on Pearl Harbor.

2. Stations activity on the Women During WWII covering Black Rosies, women in uniform, a fun rationing activity, and analyzing propaganda posters

3. Students analyze government photographs of Japanese internment and determine which ones would have been censored to the public for showing the brutal nature of Japanese-American incarceration.

4. A primary source activity analyzing 4 historical documents that reveal the importance of D-Day

5. A Socratic seminar or debate on dropping the atomic bomb exploring what led President Truman to drop the atomic bomb.

BONUS ACTIVITIES:

6. Building a Totalitarian State: Nazi Germany v China Today:  Students analyze how Hitler and the Nazis took total control and then compare their tactics to how China is using prison camps and social credit score to control their people.

7. Appeasement and the Start of WWII Decision Simulation: In groups, students act as leaders from Britain and France and respond to German aggression starting with their rebuilding of their military all the way to invading Poland and decide each time what they should do: appease, declare war, or something in between. 

8. WWII In the Pacific Video Analysis: Students watch 5 short clips detailing key battles in the Pacific and answer questions on slides.

9. WWII Project: Ethical Dilemmas: Students research, create a presentation (movie/skit, podcast, storyboard, slides) covering a controversial ethical dilemma of the war: Dropping of the Atomic Bomb, Firebombing of Tokyo or Dresden, Segregation in the Military, Rationing of Goods, Conscientious Objectors, Kamikaze Pilots, Nuremberg Trial, and more.
