WHAT STUDENTS LEARN

Through awesome political cartoons, students learn how Thomas Nast brought down one of the most powerful and corrupt politicians in American history, Boss William Tweed, and how Tweed epitomized corruption during the Gilded Age. Diving deep into the wonderful muck of Gilded Age corruption, students explore the rise of Boss William Tweed and how he and Tammany Hall controlled NYC through graft and corruption. But they also learn how corruption existed across the country during this era.
The lessons cover state-standards while making sure the content is still interesting.

Creating A Political Cartoon Activity

After the video, notes, and quiz, students first analyze a famous Thomas Nast cartoon exposing Tammany Hall and Boss Tweed’s corruption and then create their own political cartoon on political machines and Gilded Age corruption. It has supports to help all learners think critically and be successful!
