The first episode focuses on the “press-wars” between Pulitzer and Hearst and how yellow journalism and other factors led to the Spanish-American War while also covering the motivations for empire. In the second lesson, students learn how Roosevelt's Big Stick Policy transformed America's role in the world focusing on the amazing story of the construction of the Panama Canal.

1. "Click Bait Meets Yellow Journalism"- students analyze real yellow journalism that led America into the Spanish-American War and then recreate that as modern click bait and then answer reflection questions about the media.

2. "Mapping & Debating American Imperialism" - students first complete a mapping activity showing colonies gained between 1898-1900, the Panama Canal, and more. Then they read primary sources to understand the arguments for and against American expansion overseas.
